Black and
White Gelatin Silver Photography
by Scott Edwards
I’m still just a kid from Neenah, Wisconsin. Grew up there, made
best friends there, breathed its industrial perfume. Our home on McKinley Street was
located 1 block from the Soo Line railroad switchyards and 2 blocks from Neenah
Foundry Plant #1. On sunny days our streets and yards were tinted orange from sunlight
filtered through the acrid smoke billowing from foundry stacks. Sooty grit lined the gutters,
coated the windowpanes and dimmed streetlights. Our hands were blackened when we
climbed over boxcars, the shortcut to St. Margaret Mary's gymnasium. In winter,
the city crews plowed a giant snow hill in the Legion Club parking lot next to the
tracks, into which we dug caverns for hiding out and smoking cigarettes. Our tennis
shoes were stained with creosote from walking the rail beds. Walking past the foundry
subjected me to images of workers on break, with bright white eyes and grimy hands
holding cigarettes and virginal white sandwiches.
All through the night, every night - the big diesel locomotives cavorted, mashing
freight cars. It still sounds like a lullaby to me.
Industry is in my veins. I hate it. I love it. I make friends with it in my images
with the contrast and textures I use on subject matter of all kinds. This is who I am.
This is why I see things this way.
