Meet our Artists > Scott Edwards

Black and white imagery has always found favor with me for as long as I can remember. From my earliest pencil sketches to creating lithography prints with a slab of limestone in college, it has for me a characteristic texture, temperature, mood and ambiance that I could not elicit in color.

I took my very first black and white photographs in college in the mid 70s for litho studies, and did not really consider it as its own art form until I laid my eyes upon the works of the masters.

I guess I'm one of those rare few photographers who did not find Ansel Adams to be instrumental in my development. Edward Weston captured my imagination with his knack for getting images to glow and for the simple elegance of his compositions. Brett Weston revealed the beauty of black and white abstraction, and Helmut Newton taught me to include a subtle story line through the intriguing use of shadow.

I have since developed my own voice through a unique combination of film, paper, darkroom technique and of course my individual take on my surroundings.

It is my sincere hope that my images will bring you a deeper appreciation of the intrinsic beauty of black and white photography.

UPDATE: I did a big thing in 2006. I walked to the Grand Canyon. The whole damned way. I did this for myself, for clarity in my work. I did this for MSAW, for increased exposure for our family. I did this for black and white photography, for increased exposure to the slow and deliberate process of creating images with film, and I did this for my dog Luke; the really long walk that we finally got around to. This was an exercise in slowing down and appreciating the beauty that exists all around us.
