Meet our Artists > Lee Mothes

The paintings of Lee Mothes celebrate all that you love about the ocean and water -- the light and color, the peace of mind, and the adventure. Lee works from memories of a childhood spent wandering beaches, saltwater marshes and tide pools of Southern California. He has always been delighted and fascinated by the patterns of sunlight on the water, how waves shape the sand, and how winter storms drive the heavy surf up and over the beaches. The interior and old house paintings reflect his love of indigenous and eclectic architecture. Many of his paintings are of soul-nourishing places where people live, but are also natural: an old chair on a small brick patio surrounded by the sea and the sky; the view of undisturbed fields and distant water from a well-lived-in old porch. Lee's paintings reflect his belief and conviction that people and nature can co-exist beneficially.

Lee has always loved to draw and, in recent years, has found watercolor to be the best medium with which to capture the richest balance of contrast, color and brilliance. He still enjoys pencil drawing from time to time, and has been dabbling in acrylics.

Lee Mothes, a California native, studied art at California State University at Long Beach and California College of Arts and Crafts; architecture at California Polytechnic College at San Luis Obispo; and earned his Bachelor's degree in Art at Western Oregon University. He lives and paints full-time in northeast Wisconsin.
